Budapest – Cave Church

Definitely not your typical church, the Cave church on St Gellert Hill in Budapest is within a cave system originally formed by thermal springs.   The cave known as Saint Ivan’s Cave (Szent Iván-barlang) was named after Saint Ivan who lived in the cave and was renowned for his healing powers.  The church which was founded in 1926, was sealed up in 1951 following the arrest of the monks and their superior, Father Vezer by the communist regime.  The church was eventually reopened in 1991 and rightfully handed back to the monks.
