Puffins in Flight

Here are a few in-flight shots of one of our favourite birds, the Puffin, taken at the Farne Islands during the breeding season. These little birds work their socks off, constantly bringing in sand eels and other small fish to feed their pufflings who hungrily wait in their burrow.  If that is not enough, upon arrival at the burrow these little birds have to use their speed and agility to dodge the waiting gulls who are always ready to pounce and steal their beakfulls of fish.  Look out for future posts showing this daily battle.

A Sunday Stroll

As it turns out this was my final autumnal Sunday stroll, as winter has arrived with a vengeance – well that’s my opinion anyway – I much prefer the warmth of summer.  If what the forecasters are predicting (worst winter in decades) comes to fruition, then at least it may bring opportunities for some interesting wintry images.  Anyway, I digress, the images below were taken at Marsworth reservoir in Buckinghamshire on a reasonably sunny day, which brought out the vibrant colours of the mallards.  What appeared to be a young grey heron showed itself on the other side of the canal bank.  It happily posed for me, which I like to imagine was down to its fascination at the numerous gulls diving and fighting for the scraps of bread that were on offer.
