Hobby

Here are a few shots of a hobby, a relatively small falcon renowned for its magnificent aerial displays.  The hobby’s prey generally consists of winged insects and small birds both of which are caught in flight.  Indeed, one of the shots below shows the hobby skilfully eating a dragonfly whilst in flight.  Considering the aerial ability and speed of this falcon the shots are possibly as good as it gets for me and my equipment.

A Posing Swallow

Normally quite a difficult bird to capture, particularly in flight, this swallow briefly perched and posed for me.  Taken at Coombe Hill in the Chilterns, Buckinghamshire.

Osprey Vs Fish?

Clearly in this case the fish lost out, but only after several attempts.  The last place I thought I would ever witness an osprey in action would be at a reservoir near Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire.  I hoped when I last visited Scotland to enjoy a similar experience, but with no success.  However, this juvenile osprey appeared approx. 2 weeks ago and has been entertaining the masses with its fearless, fast plunges into the water in an attempt to catch some lunch.  I would of course have liked the shots to be sharper, but the ambient lighting was relatively poor.

Tawny Owl

I have never seen a Tawny Owl in the wild and unless you are a keen birder I suspect that would be par for the course for most.  On this occasion, I was standing at a farm gate for nearly two hours photographing red kites in flight when I turned to my left for no particular reason, – by so I discovered this Tawny Owl, only 20ft away,  having a good old nosey at me.  After a few minutes snapping away the Tawny obviously got bored and rapidly disappeared up the tree.  Frustratingly, it was quite late in the day and the light was very poor; as you can see my lens struggled to cope so the shots are slightly blurry and not the best, but still worth taking nonetheless!

Grey Herons in Flight

These shots of grey herons in flight were taken at Haddenham near Aylesbury.  With there vast wings outstretched and long thin neck extended they kind of remind me of something prehistoric.
