I briefly visited St Nicholas church during a short stay on the Jurassic coast. Situated in the charming little village of Moreton, the church was bombed by the Germans in 1940 causing substantial damage, in particular to the stained glass. Restoration soon followed with the gradual replacement of the uniquely designed windows taking place during 1955-87 by Laurence Whistler. The windows are stunningly etched and depict stars, landscapes and candles as well as fondly remembered names. In 1935 the funeral service for Thomas Edward Lawrence, better known by some as Lawrence of Arabia, took place at the church and you can find his grave in the nearby church cemetery.
