Not surprisingly, my main aim in South Luangwa was to see the abundant wildlife, which I easily achieved. However, I did want to visit Mfuwe, the local village, to sample what life was like for the locals, so taking an evening off from my safari, I ventured into Mfuwe accompanied by a safari guide for a small fee. Compared to our standard of living, life for the locals is tough, imagine having no air-conditioning in 100 degrees plus heat and living with the risk of bumping into a wild animal at night scavenging for food scraps. Despite this, the locals I met and observed were very friendly and always had a welcoming smile. A fascinating few hours with down to earth and unspoilt people making the best of their lot.
