ELEPHANT HERDS – SOUTH LUANGWA NATIONAL PARK

Two herds of elephants, one of which had clearly been bathing and the other in the process of crossing the Luangwa river. In the early 1970s there were approximately 100,000 elephants in Luangwa, current estimates put the numbers at circa 15,000 due to decades of poaching. Gladly, this number is now stable due to education and an increase in tourism which has given the local communities other financial opportunities rather than the ill-gotten gains from poaching.
