On Saturday 4 Oct last, I attended a deer photography workshop in Richmond Park with Tom Way, a professional wildlife photographer (www.tomwayphotography.co.uk), in order to capture images of red deer in their prime during the start of the breeding season.  A long day ensued with much of the park explored using Tom’s excellent local knowledge in order to capture the right shot.  This knowledge, combined with Tom’s photographic tips (working with the available light which was fairly absent on the day), resulted in many opportunities to view the red stags roaring, barking and covering their already impressive antlers with bracken to make themselves look even more intimidating (as if they needed to!).  Sadly, any signs of rutting were confined to the deep bracken and were therefore difficult to capture.  Regardless of this, I think you will agree that the workshop was more than worthwhile.  I took nigh on 600 photos on the day and having carefully reviewed them, it will probably take at least two posts to cover the best shots.
